How to Dress for Freezing Weather: Experts’ Top Tips for Warm Underwear
When the temperature drops below freezing, the same question comes up every year: how can you dress warmly without sacrificing style? Experts share their best tips for mastering the art of layering.
Swiss Lady CEO Satu Sinisalo emphasizes the importance of layering in Finland’s changing temperatures and weather conditions. The layer closest to the skin should ideally be made of a soft natural fiber, such as cotton or wool. According to Sinisalo, cellulose-based fibers such as viscose and lyocell are also good options.
“The ideal base layer combines wool with a technical material that wicks moisture away from the skin to the next layer of clothing. For example, products from Mey and Falke use the same technology to wick away moisture while keeping the skin dry and warm.”
According to Anne Turhala, the Finnish representative for the Chantelle lingerie brand, getting dressed starts with underwear, even when wearing multiple layers—the warming layers go on top. Whatever the weather, underwear should always fit your body as well as possible. For the middle layer, Turhala recommends choosing a natural material, such as high-quality, breathable wool.
