From underwires to centrally placed straps—experts explain which features can help provide relief

Neck and shoulder discomfort can result from poor workplace ergonomics, but it can also stem from an imbalance between the chest and back, as a heavy bust pulls the shoulders forward and weakens posture. Experts explain what kind of bra to choose to ease discomfort—and why it’s worth wearing a sports bra even when going for a walk.
Rauni Marttila, the Finnish representative for the PrimaDonna lingerie brand, emphasizes the importance of a properly sized, supportive bra in preventing neck and shoulder discomfort.
“It all starts with wearing the right bra size—especially if you have a heavy bust. The larger the bra size, the more important it is to wear an underwire bra. An underwire bra lifts the bust into the right position, improving posture. Better posture, in turn, affects the alignment of the upper spine, which is connected to neck and shoulder discomfort.”
For comfort at home, many people wear lightweight pull-over bra tops that can’t be adjusted, or worn-out bras that have lost their support. In bras like these, it’s easy to slouch, with the shoulder blades no longer aligned. It’s important to remember that high-quality comfort bras are also available, with no compromises on materials, design, or fit.

Petri Puustinen, a representative of the bra brand Anita, agrees.
“It’s important that both the bra and the band are the right size so that the straps don’t bear the full burden of support. Support around the band is really important.”
A quality bra is often intricately constructed and carefully designed to support and lift the breasts.
Anne Turhala, a representative of the bra brand Chantelle, adds that along with the correct bra size and underwire support, wide, centrally positioned straps play an important role in preventing neck and shoulder discomfort. Wide, preferably padded straps distribute the weight of the breasts evenly, while narrow straps often dig into the shoulders.
According to Rauni Marttila, a sports bra is a must—even if you’re just going for a brisk walk.
The most important features of a sports bra are wide, adjustable straps, a firm band, and lightweight, breathable materials. The right sports bra keeps breast movement to a minimum during exercise, helping slow the stretching of connective tissue.
“The more intense the workout, the more supportive the bra should be,” Marttila sums up.
